Tokyo Police Club’s “Breakneck Speed”

Tokyo Police Club's "Champ"Newmarket, Ontario’s Tokyo Police Club may have hit the mainstream—or something very close to it—but fear not, indie lovers! The loss of indie obscurity alone isn’t enough to ruin this band’s appeal to any self-respecting indie rocker with a passion for catchy riffs, crafty vocals, and simple yet mysterious lyrics.

I’m itching to see these guys live. If only their upcoming tour, in support of the forthcoming LP, Champ, were coming closer to home! The album, slated for release on June 8, is their second full-length effort and will be released on their new American label, according to Spinner.

So far, Tokyo Police Club has released one song off the new album: the indie-pop, drumset-driven, melodiously playful “Breakneck Speed.” Check it out:

Breakneck speed
Tying up your hands
Cuz you’ll land back on your feet
You know what I mean

Vowel change
I remember when our voices used to sound the same
Now we just translate

Cuz I’m still amazed you made it out alive after what you did
Born on your feet, running
Forest fires underneath your bed
But it’s good to be back, good to be back, good to be back

Spell it out
I always skip the words
Cuz all the pictures are so bright and loud
Better off than now

Cuz I’m still amazed you made it out alive after what you did
Born on your feet, running
Forest fires underneath your bed
Cuz it’s good to be back, good to be back

Super fun
At the movies, drunk and young
Double knots that came undone
But the big bad years are gone
Yeah, the big bad years are done and gone away
I remember when our voices used to sound the exact same
Now we just translate

Cuz I’m still amazed you made it out alive after what you did
Born on your feet, running
Forest fires underneath your bed
But it’s good to be back, good to be back, good to be back
