Summer is usually my time to make up for all the money I spent over the course of the school year, and to make money to pay my part of the tuition for the coming year. Well, it didn’t really work out that way this summer.
I crunched some numbers and discovered that I made only around $400 this summer, after subtracting my expenses (about $1,800). This isn’t close to what Wesleyan expects me to contribute to my education this year; it isn’t even enough to cover what I spent over the 2007-08 school year.
The big expenses this summer were transportation, car insurance, and my trip to New Orleans. The New Orleans trip set me back a bit over $400—which isn’t bad, considering that I was down there for an entire month. My parents ended up contributing around $130 to the trip, in the form of prepaid minutes for the T-Mobile phone, $50 in cash from my mom, and sunscreen and bug spray and stuff like that.
My parents also paid for the two LSAT prep books I bought (and which I may not use, since the whole law school thing isn’t so appealing to me at the moment) and my new bike, both of which were officially classified as birthday presents. My dad also paid for some repairs to my car that I otherwise wouldn’t have had done.
Since summer began, I’ve spent:
- $220 on gasoline
- $170 on food
- $130 on traveling to work in Boston
- $80 for telephone service with AT&T
- $25 on a donation to the Obama campaign
In addition, I’ve spent only $55 on alcohol, only $17 on clothing, and only $1.05 on toilet paper.

I don’t know, Justin. That’s a lot of splurging on toilet paper. You’re going to have to be more frugal during the year
I dunno. My bum can tell the difference between 59¢ toilet paper and 99¢ toilet paper. It might be difficult to adjust!
Wish I knew you were possibly in the market for an LSAT book. I bought one over winter break last year before I decided that law school wasn’t for me.
Heh. At least we came to the same wise conclusion.
