The transition from creepy verses of strange visions to the expansive, light-filled chorus is really effective in this song—a good example of the instrumentation following closely with the lyrics. The opening verse is tentative, dark, and close… and then the sound opens up, fills out and surrounds, just like the morning light that’s “burst[ing] bright”.
Most Eisley songs are pretty haunting—if not for their lyrics, then, at least, for the stirring, slightly scratchy teenaged female vocals. Yet, this song is the most striking I’ve yet heard from them. I don’t know how these kids do it. Just the thought of a bunch of teenage kids putting out music with this kind of power… it’s kinda hard to believe it’s real.
I awoke the dawn
Saw horses growing out the lawn
I glimpsed a bat with butterfly wings
Oh, what marvelous thingsDark night, hold tight
And sleep tight, my baby
Morning light shall burst bright
And keep us here safelyI followed a rabbit
Through rows of mermaid entwined shrubbery
Oh, what marvelous things
But, they are, they are, they are giving me the creepsDark night, hold tight
And sleep tight, my baby
Morning light shall burst bright
And keep us here safelyOh, lying in the sun
Everyday, feeling all of the magic in life
And the wonderDark night, hold tight
And sleep tight, my baby
Morning light shall burst bright
And keep us here safely
