Some post-Spring Break notes

  • Looking at the long-outdated websites of old bands that I love makes me sad. Take, for example, the website of Something Corporate. The artwork reflective of their 2003 release North, the headline story about a 2002 show at Tower Records. The pre-Web 2.0 cluttered design (actually a bit refreshing), the falling leaves in the Flash animation on the left (how sadly appropriate). The whole thing is just a reminder of days gone past, filling me with a feeling of nostalgia and grief over growing up.
  • I’ve applied for a few summer jobs/internships so far, but I totally flaked out on my plans to apply everywhere over break. So basically, I’m in a hole that I dug for myself, and I’m not sure what I’ll be doing this summer. In any case, by applying so late, I’ve pretty much killed any chance that I could get grant funds through the Wesleyan Summer Experience Grant. Which means that I’ll be losing money—likely, a lot of it—this summer. I think I’ll soon be much closer friends with the Financial Aid office.
  • I have $687.96 in points left. And since there are about 52 days until I’ll be leaving campus, that means that I have $13.23 to spend on meals everyday. Weshop, here I come!
  • The rest of this weekend will be spent reading Uncle Robin in His Cabin in Virginia, and Tom Without One in Boston. It’s an anti-Tom novel published in Richmond in 1853. I have about 150 pages left of this book, then I have to review Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and then I can write the 8-10 pages that are due on Tuesday. Ugh. My parents wanted to come down for Easter tomorrow, but I told them I just won’t have time. Dammmmmmit.

You like Something Corporate too? Damn! I think the EP version of Hurricane (The Formal Weather Pattern) was better than the version on Leaving Through the Window, and I didn’t really get into North.

Perhaps I’ll have to give it another shot.

I actually rediscovered their website while perusing your list of bands on spazeboy.net. You’ve got some excellent bands listed over there! The Get Up Kids, OK Go, NIN, and Something Corporate are among my favorites.

In my opinion, North gets five stars, to Leaving Through the Window‘s four. If you decide to give the former another listen, make sure you also find the song “Watch the Sky,” which is off of the (UK/Japanese) import versions of North. Along with Konstantine, those are my two favorite Something Corporate songs (although Audioboxer‘s “Little” gets nearly the same label).

Speaking of Audioboxer, I agree with your preference for that version of Hurricane.

Oh! An MP3 version of “Watch the Sky”.
