Thoughts on the Help Desk relocation

After we were reproached today by our professor for not putting enough effort into Latin, I stopped by the new Help Desk, which is now in SCIE 116 instead of SCIE 143. It’s, uh, interesting. Brighter, devoid of any personality in the form of decorations on the walls and such. Definitely not as cozy; it’s much more open, which is good because it’s not cluttered, but it’s also much more, well, sanitized-feeling. We have a room smaller than the old Help Desk, without our own bathroom, pushed back into where the old computer store used to be. It’s in such a dead-end location.

Making matters worse, it apparently wasn’t built according to our plans and blueprint. The service center, which was slated to retain its consumer front in the new Help Desk, was supposed to have a little stand and cash register, if I remember correctly. Instead, they kept the entire old countertop, which is huge, and that takes up maybe 2/5 of the room. And presumably, it’s going to be wasted space, since there is only supposed to be one person behind the counter facilitating accepting and returning computers. So while the planning made it seem pretty sweet, they didn’t follow through on the execution, and it sucks.

I took Micah’s shift tonight from 8-10 in exchange for his taking my shift on Thursday night. I’m not really looking forward to it. The space behind our desks is tiny and I feel like we’ve been pushed to the side in our own operation. But on the bright side, at least the entire place is clean, for once. No cords wrapped around all the desks and all over the floor. That’ll be nice.

Help Desk politics: Isaac seems convinced he’ll be the manager next year, at least in his conversations with me. That’s an interesting thought. I will refrain from saying more, since this is a public entry.

After stopping by Help Desk, I got my flu shot; my arm’s still a little sore. I went to the bank and talked to Tamara about how it’s so cold, gas is expensive, and how I’m going to Boston on Thursday; and of course, transacted some banking business. Up the hill home, made some peanut butter and jelly for lunch, and read the news. For once, I had finished all the readings before class, so I had nothing else to do. It was nice.

Class… oh, class. Never mind about that. Let’s see what tonight has in store for me.

tangential: I bought more peanut butter today. It’s ~ $6 here for a jar (it’s a novelty item) and soo worth it. I think my addiction to peanut butter is unhealthy :(

on topic: oh, Helpdesk. Your politics are so interesting. I think the design of the new Helpdesk sounds remarkably like the design of Usdan in general: thrilling promises, but a pretty and nonfunctional execution. Oh, well :(

Yeah, that’s basically it. Oh, and $6 for peanut butter? Unless you bought a jumbo tub-size jar, that’s, well, totes ridic!
