I am back at Wesleyan. First night back was a bit lonely; it’s just me and Janet alone in this huge house, and only Jia was around. But earlier today, I went to dinner with Janet and Jia and Thom, and after that we saw Emily, Joan, Adam, and Dominic, and I met Adam, a new transfer student. We also saw Asia and Kevin! On their way to play tennis! They’re so cute!
We had a first taste of the new food service provider, Bon Appetit, and it didn’t taste too bad. Now if only they weren’t screwing over their workers and the union.
The new campus center is gigantic, and I haven’t even been inside yet. The back is beautiful—huge recessed patio, big tables and giant stone benches—but the inside looks, well, snooty, and too big for Wesleyan. It almost looks like it belongs at a big state school, and not lil’ ol’ elite Wesleyan. But, you know, there’s nothing I can do about it now. We can’t just tear down the building!
Last night I ate nothing but two packages of Ramen noodles left over from freshman year. It had expired at the beginning of the month, but I figured, how can Ramen go bad? It’s just hard noodles and a little sealed package of salt and yellow stuff. So it wasn’t bad, but I fell asleep soon after eating it, and waking up with half-digested Ramen in your stomach is no fun.
I’m mostly settled into my room. It’s huge, and there’s a big echo whenever I do anything—even just typing on the laptop here makes a tiny echo. I have three big windows and the room is really bright, beat-up hardwood floors, and white walls. I also have a closet with a shoe shelf; how cute! The bed’s a full, which is nice and should come in handy, heh. It’s far too much room for me; I take up about a third of the surface area.
The house itself is nice. It’s huge, roomy, and super-old, probably at least 80 years. The siding on the outside is all covered in lead paint, and though the house is livable, it’s definitely hitting the run-down point.
On the upside, the house is in a pretty good location in proximity to important stuff, like the gas station, Dunkin Donuts, Main Street, and Cromwell. We have a big backyard, with ample parking, and a nice porch on the back of the house. Lots of storage space—three closets. A big kitchen (electric stove, boo) and huge fridge; living room and nice roomy foyer. Even a room upstairs that has no furniture, potentially to be used as a coat room or makeout room or something during parties.
I’m going to clean up the yard and get rid of some hornet nests around the house in the coming days, and get us a recycling bin. There’s lots of little stuff to be done, and it’s exciting, because we get to do it—it’s our house! I feel all responsible and such.
I have little doubt that this will be a good year. I’m just now getting used to the fact that this is our house. A house! This is crazy! It’s like our time down in Texas, only for a year and in a bigger space. But with no beach down the stairs. Hmm…
I’ve just finished “Trust No 1″, a Season-9 episode of The X-Files. So good. I want to watch a bunch of episodes with Holly when she visits.
Janet and I also spent about an hour or two talking to Mad today. She’s in Hungary—ridic! Skype is pretty nifty, and the connection was clear. It was good hearing from her. Go team SEX! lol. Keep up the iSketch, Mad. I’ll join you tomorrow.
OK, bedtime. I’m waking up at 8:00 to go running. It’s all part of my new lifestyle. Late to bed, early to rise. More than one meal a day. Man, it’s good to have goals.
Good night!
Oh, but first, I forgot to mention: biggest drawback of the house? Loud traffic. We’re right on the corner of Routes 66 and 3, and there is so much traffic, it’s ridiculous. At all hours of the night there are huge trucks going by. Some of the heavier ones cause the house to shake as they zoom by. It makes it tough to sleep, but if I learned to live with the trucks outside Weshop every morning freshman year, I have no doubt I’ll adapt to the circumstances this year. Besides, it’s an effin’ house!! Woo!
Oh, and tomorrow, after running: shopping, bank, basement break-in, and seeing lots of people, including but not limited to Michelle Katz and Joan. And food! Lots of food!
OK, Skype with Mad! And then bed! Really soon! Woo! I’m so happy. Bedtime, though. lol.
