Missives from Montreal: Day 3, and escapades

Today was phenomenal, though it came to my attention that I am burning through my budgeted money very, very quickly.. It’s 3:45 AM though, so I am going to be brief. As in, it’s time for a list:

  • Jewish deli: I tried to order a turkey-and-ham sandwich. Then I learned that that’s not possible in a kosher restaurant. Oops. Total: $5.64. I gave the cashier a US$20 bill and got $16-something back in Canadian currency. Weird.
  • Strategic gaming store: pretty cool overall. Lots of really nice chess sets.
  • Two rounds of debate: one won, lost one. There are four more later today, starting at 9:15. Yes, ouch.
  • Chocolate ‘n’ booze: we went to Juliette et Chocolat, a chocolate restaurant. I ordered le choco mojito—literally, a glass of dark chocolate with mint and liquor—and la normande, a buckwheat crèpe with carmelized apples and two scoops of vanilla ice cream, all covered in chocolate sauce and then set aflame with some really strong liquor. I couldn’t finish it all. Total: $19.17. It was subsidized by the team, so I ended up paying CAD$10.
  • Jazz club: the place was called Bebop. It was pretty intimate, and very smoky. So many people smoke here. The music was powerful and fun. We had a good time. I threw CAD$2.25 in the hat for the performers.
  • Hookah bar: at around 2, Bebop’s band ended their show and we went to Café Gitana, a hookah bar on Rue Denis. We were there until 3.

It was a totally kick-ass day.
